03 CA Dean Hospital Reaches Weather Tight Milestone

06 Human Experience Award Winner

A Letter from Our President

Dear friends, As warm weather begins to return and we’re all anxious to get out and about, I’m pleased to share that we’ve seen steady progress on the construction of the new Northern Light CA Dean Hospital. As you read through this newsletter, you’ll get an update on the project and have a chance to view some images. If you’d like to see what the final product will look like, I encourage you to scan the QR code below for a video flythrough of the new hospital.

And while the new, modern hospital will certainly change your CA Dean experience, one thing that won’t change is the caring, compassionate team that will deliver your care. In this newsletter you’ll read about how our hospital is working closely with Northern Light Mayo Hospital to serve our rural communities, you’ll hear from a patient who credits our team for saving his life, and you’ll learn that our patient experience scores are nationally recognized. I’m proud to serve alongside our team as they work to provide you with the best possible care, right here in Greenville. As you begin to plan your summer events, I hope you’ll take note of our save the date section. We’d love to see you at our annual Bike & Boat event or the CA Dean Forrest G. Whitman Golf Tournament! These events are always a great time

and help to raise critical funds for our community hospital. Thank you for your continued support of CA Dean Hospital.

CA Dean Hospital Reaches Weather Tight Milestone Northern Light CA Dean Hospital is celebrating a big milestone in its Modernization Project: the new ambulance and main hospital buildings are now weather tight. Currently, an average of 25 construction workers are on site each day to move the project into a new phase.

“ With the buildings fully closed in and protected from the elements, the construction crew can proceed with wiring, walls, and other interior work. Installation of the interior metal framing in the new hospital is already well underway. Our new hospital is really starting to take shape.”

— MARIE VIENNEAU FACHE, PRESIDENT, CA DEAN HOSPITAL

THE MODERNIZATION PROJECT remains on budget, and renovations to the East Wing building remain on schedule. Due to supply chain issues, the opening of the new hospital, known as the Buck Family Building, has been changed from August 2023 to February 2024. Demolition and landscaping will be complete by the fall of 2024 as originally planned. “Like many other building projects that started during the pandemic, we have had to work through supply chain challenges, including a delay in receiving equipment for the new hospital’s electrical system,” says Vienneau. “The final end date for the project has not changed, but we will have to wait just a little bit longer to open the new hospital.” “It’s amazing to think about far we’ve come since announcing the completion of the $6.2 million capital campaign a year ago, breaking ground on the project last spring, and putting the final steel beam in place last fall,” adds Vienneau. “We’re looking forward to celebrating more milestones in 2023.”

That’s what Northern Light Mayo and CA Dean Hospitals have experienced since Mayo Hospital joined CA Dean as a member of Northern Light Health in 2020. Now, Piscataquis County’s two hospitals are collaborating to provide patients with access to comfortable, private rooms more quickly, as close to home as possible. When two hospitals share resources and expertise, good things can happen.

Mayo Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) and Medical/Surgical Unit (Med/Surg) have been very busy lately. Sometimes, patients who need a Med/Surg bed wait hours or even days in the ED for one to become available. Some of those patients can now transfer to CA Dean Hospital to get a private room right away. “While patients are well cared for in the ED, they appreciate getting settled into a private room quickly,” says Dave McDermott, MD, vice president and senior physician executive. “An inpatient room is the best setting for them to rest and recover, and it’s great that we can now offer faster access to this care right here in Piscataquis County, as close as possible to patients’ loved ones.”

DEIDRE GILBERT, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy at CA Dean Hospital for nearly eight years, recently accepted the new role of Regional Director of Pharmacy for Northern Light Mayo and CA Dean Hospitals. Under Deidre’s leadership our two hospital pharmacies will collaborate more closely for the benefit of our patients. INTRODUCING OUR NEW REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF PHARMACY

Each morning, clinical leaders at CA Dean determine how many open beds will be available for Mayo Hospital patients. The information is communicated to the Mayo Hospital ED, and patients who could benefit from a transfer are offered the opportunity to go to CA Dean. Patients are transferred by ambulance, accompanied by skilled emergency medical technicians and paramedics for the 40-minute ride. Patients can expect to receive the same high-quality care at either location because the hospitals have many of the same capabilities and the staff have similar training. “Many other Maine hospitals are experiencing similar capacity constraints right now,” adds Dr. McDermott.

“Fortunately, we’re able to offer a creative solution not available to most others due to the proximity of our hospitals and the close working relationships between the teams in Greenville and Dover Foxcroft. It’s beneficial for our patients and our hospitals.”

—DAVE MCDERMOTT, MD, VICE PRESIDENT AND SENIOR PHYSICIAN EXECUTIVE

Last fall, employees and the entire community were invited to sign the last beam and “leave their mark” before the final piece of steel was installed on the new hospital building. In addition to the signed beam, there are other special and permanent remembrances inside the walls of the new structure. Our construction crew installed plaques in memory of hospital and community champions, Dr. Peter Buck and Ben Haug. The late DR. BUCK , who had deep ties to the Moosehead Lake region, made a transformational gift to help complete the $6.2 million capital campaign supporting the historic modernization project. The hospital and ambulance garage will be named in honor of the Buck family. A SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE FOR LATE CA DEAN CHAMPIONS

BEN HAUG , who passed away on October 24, 2022, was a longtime trustee of the Charles A. Dean Trust and a former Scott Paper executive. Mr. Haug led the Trust for many decades and directed annual support to the hospital including the Preserving the Promise capital campaign. The Charles A. Dean Trust, named in honor of the former president of Hollingsworth & Whitney paper company and hospital namesake, was established to support the communities where Hollingsworth &Whitney, and later Scott Paper Company, employees lived and worked.

Specialized care for our youngest patients

If you’re a parent or know someone who is, you know that raising an infant is completely life changing. Now, imagine having to travel a long distance to get specialized healthcare for baby during those busy first few weeks. Fortunately, thanks to an expansion of pediatric occupational therapy services at Northern Light Health Center—Sangerville, new parents can access even more advanced care for infants close to home. Bryanne (Bry) Lovell, MSOTR/L, an

occupational therapist at the Sangerville clinic, recently began providing care for torticollis, a twisted or rotated neck condition that causes the head to tilt down or to one side. Infants affected by torticollis usually acquire the condition at or shortly after birth. “Infants with torticollis often cannot turn their head to interact with their environment, and the result can be developmental delays. If left untreated, torticollis can cause lasting cognitive issues, weakness, and balance problems. That’s why it’s important to begin treatment right away.”

– BRYANNE (BRY) LOVELL, MSOTR/L

THANK YOU to the Emergency Room Staff

I came into your ER early Sunday, February 12th with a widow maker heart attack. As a Wilderness First Responder I have been frustrated that I rarely knew what happened to my patients after they moved on because of HIPAA [patient privacy laws]. First, I wanted to say thank you from ... the bottom of my heart, or actually from During my stay I had the fortune of seeing two shifts in the ER and they were both filled with love, care and wonderful people from the doctors to the CNAs. Thank you all for your attention, care and love. It was so felt! Through what were, I think, Herculean efforts to get me transported to Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland, I arrived there Sunday Evening. They put a stent it the left descending artery to correct a 90% blockage and I was released on Valentine’s Day which seemed appropriate! So, I am home, taking it easy, feeling well, will start cardio rehab and a follow up with local cardiologists. Sending lots of love and hugs to each and every one I interacted with! Thank you! my LAD [left anterior descending artery].

For more information about treatment for torticollis and the pediatric occupational therapy services available in our region, please call 207.876.2918. deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), and several undiagnosed problems, such as difficulty with paying attention or concentrating. Fortunately, treatment can help restore full neck movement. Most infants respond well to occupational therapy, but when additional care is needed, patients can be referred to other experts. With the proper care, infants affected by torticollis usually recover completely. Torticollis is one of many conditions that Bry treats at the health center in Sangerville. She also treats autism, cerebral palsy, genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, attention

Warmest regards,

– A grateful patient
