Environmental Sustainability at Northern Light Health

The healthcare sector is a major contributor to climate change, which affects the health and safety of our patients, employees, and the people of Maine. At Northern Light Health, we are working hard to decrease our effect on the environment to keep Maine communities healthy and resilient by:

Signing a national Healthcare Sector Pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050

Developing a Climate Resiliency Plan to identify risks and vulnerabilities related to extreme weather events, rising temperatures and sea level, air quality, water access, diseases transmitted by insects, as well as how climate affects traditional resource-based employment in our communities. This plan looks at how Northern Light Health can partner with other organizations to help our community.

Tracking and analyzing the environmental footprint of the work we do and the spaces in which we do it, and work to improve our performance to meet the goals to which we have committed.

Exploring and investing in more sustainable practices, products, and relationships in clinical practice, supply chain, food service, solid waste management, and facility infrastructure.

Encouraging and empowering employees to implement small changes to make their everyday work tasks more environmentally friendly and sharing their successes to inspire others.

Launching a Climate Health Team made up of employees that are passionate about this issue and want to do their part to make a difference. The team has regular meetings with guest speakers and lively discussion. They publish a newsletter and have a variety of working groups. Employees interested in getting involved are welcome!
